Civil Liability Amendment (Provisional Damages for Dust Diseases) Act 2024

As we close out what has been a significant year, although saddened by the loss of our founder, we are also filled with immense gratitude and pride for the strides made in advocating for those impacted by asbestos and silica-related dust diseases.

One of the most profound moments of this year was the commencement of the Civil Liability Amendment (Provisional Damages for Dust Diseases) Act 2024 (WA) on December 1. This legislation is a testament to the ADSA’s ongoing fight for justice and fairness for those affected. Western Australians Plaintiffs can now seek further damages under specific circumstances like their counterparts in the Eastern States. This legislation driven through, despite the challenges of vested interests, marks a monumental step in addressing the injustices faced by sufferers and their families living with these devastating conditions.

This achievement would not have been possible without the support and dedication of our community, the tireless efforts of our team, and the recognition of our work by leaders in government. The letter we received from the Attorney General Hon John Quigley, acknowledges the significant role the Asbestos Diseases Society of Australia has played since 1979 in raising awareness, supporting affected families, and advocating for meaningful reforms.

To all our supporters, volunteers, and partners—thank you for being part of this journey. Together, we continue to honour the legacy of those we have lost and work towards a future free of dust diseases.

As we look ahead to 2025, we remain steadfast in our mission and inspired by the progress we’ve made.

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas & a peaceful new year.
